Dear New Life Family,
Summer is in full swing! I always enjoy the different rhythm that summer brings. Here on campus our school is enjoying Summer Camp with an “Olympics” theme. We are also planning a church Arts Camp later in the summer so that should be fun. My family will be gone a little bit this summer. The first week of July we are taking off to enjoy a family reunion in southern Colorado with Jacie’s family. Then the last week of July and first week of August we will be in Michigan spending time with my folks, visiting a few colleges for Natalie and attending the CRC’s Inspire 2017 conference in Detroit. Eric and Jana Schlukebir will also be there so we are looking forward to seeing them.
I have a few updates to pass on that may be of interest to you.
- Youth Director – Council is pleased to let you know that we removed the “Interim” title from Trish Helmerich’s job description. Trish has been doing an excellent job with the youth and at our last council meeting decided to make this switch. Praise God for Trish!!
- REVEAL Survey – We received the results of our survey this week. The Discipleship Team is processing the results and will be forwarding our recommendation to Council. The plan is to incorporate the next steps into our strategic plan so we can build momentum spiritually. At our July congregational meeting we will have a report of the survey and how this will help us grow. So stay tuned! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Randy Wester or myself.
- My Role – Many of you are aware that I have been coaching our church planters. I have been the CRC’s Cluster Leader for Houston for several years. A few months ago I applied for a Local Mission Leader position with Christian Reformed Home Missions. This position is very similar to the work I was doing as a Cluster Leader but is a little broader in scope and will require a few more hours. Instead of working about 5 hours a week with a stipend I will be working 8 hours a week and serving our church planters here in Texas. The church will be compensated for my time. The council approved this shift but I wanted you to be aware as well. I start next week.
Last but not least, this Sunday we are starting a new summer message series called Gods at War. It was inspired by Kyle Idleman’s book Gods at War: Defeating the Idols that Battle for Your Heart. We are building on our last Ignite series where we explored what it would look like for God to ignite passion in our hearts for Him. In this new series, we are focusing on the topic of idolatry and exposing things that get in the way of us loving God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. If God has ignited passion for Him, how can we keep that passion strong? What are the things we need to be aware of that get in the way? What do we need to change to put God first? As we take an honest look at our lives, my prayer is that we would heed Solomon’s wisdom: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23).
Grace and peace.
